Luggage Tips for Ski Vacations from Jans Park City

Luggage Tips for Ski Vacations from Jans Park City

Reading Time: 3 minutes

My biggest challenge when it comes to ski vacations is packing.  Or as my husband would say, over-packing.  Unfortunately for him, this seems to be a genetic trait that I’ve somehow passed down to our teenaged twins.  When we head to Sundance Resort, a mere 45 minutes from our home in Park City, for our annual post-Christmas getaway, we look like a mountain version of the Beverly Hillbillies.  The car is so stuffed with alpine skis and Nordic skis, alpine and Nordic skate boots, snowshoes and countless bags that my husband can only use the side view mirrors.  In an effort to get my over-packing predilection under control, I turned to the experts at Dakine to streamline my luggage needs.

Roller Bags – Luggage for Weeklong Ski Vacations
My first go-to piece of luggage is the Dakine Split Roller with a retractable handle and attached wheels.  While it comes in a 65L size that would suffice for most normal humans, I know my limits and instead prefer the 100L version.  Boasting a split level design so that I can separate my baselayers from my ski parka, the Dakine Split Roller 100L keeps me organized not only while packing, but when I reach my final destination.  Exterior pockets provide storage for easily misplaced smaller items, such as electronics cords, cameras or even sunscreen.  And since it is made of durable 600D polyester and replaceable urethane wheels, the Dakine Split Roller holds up to even the most burly baggage handlers.  I suggest choosing one of Dakine’s vibrant plaid patterns so you can easily locate your bag in the sea of black luggage on the baggage claim carousel.

Boot Bag – Every Skiers “Must Have” Piece of Luggage
I’ll often leave my skis at home when heading out for a ski vacation and instead use the chance to demo the latest in alpine ski technology.  However, with my hard to fit feet, renting alpine ski boots can be downright painful.  The solution?  I take my own ski boots along in the Dakine 69L Boot Locker.  Offering both a men’s and women’s version, this innovative boot bag keeps ski boots safe in a separate, tarp lined compartment located in the bottom.  That leaves the top compartment of this split level boot bag dry (and free of smelly boots) so I can stow my helmet, goggles, neck gaiter, gloves and even a lightweight ski shell.  The padded shoulder strap allows me to be self-sufficient when carrying my toasty warm ski boots from the condo to the mountain.  And having everything in one place means I’ll be less likely to forget something crucial.

Women’s Toiletry Bag  – A Woman’s Best Friend
Even hardcore female skiers need a toiletry bag to avoid a toothpaste explosion on your favorite alpine ski pants.  Having tried countless options, I’ve finally found the answer in the Dakine Alina 3L Travel Bag.   Small enough to tuck in a corner of my suitcase, its thoughtful design gives me plenty of storage and opens up to hang from a bathroom towel bar.  Zippered mesh pockets help me easily find what I need and a removable clear vinyl bag keeps shampoo and conditioner organized.  An added bonus is Alina’s compact size which gives the illusion of me not being an over-packer at all.
