How to Tie A Fly Knot – The Improved Clinch Knot

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Learning how to tie fly knots is as important to the sport of fly fishing as selecting the right rod and reel. The Improved Clinch Knot is the most basic of all fly knots, and is used to attach a fly to your tippet. Watch the video above to learn how to tie this fly knot.  The Improved Clinch Knot is also useful for anglers to easily attach a second fly when fishing with tandem flies.

The following knot tying videos from Jans clearly demonstrate how to tie a variety of fly knots. Led my JANS Fly Fishing Expert, Dan Bell, these step-by-step videos make knot tying easy and informative.

Double & Triple Surgeon’s Knot
For line to line connections, The Double Surgeon’s Knot and Triple Surgeon’s Knot are the best ways to add tippet to your leader to make it longer when fly fishing. These are especially useful fly knots when working with radically different diameter lines. The Double Surgeon’s Knot works best with heavy diameter leaders while the Triple Surgeon’s Knot is ideal for lighter tippets.

Loop Knot
Learn to tie the Loop Knot for heavier leaders and tying on streamers. This fly knot puts great action into your flies for better results when fly fishing.

Blood Knot
The Blood Knot, also known as the Barrel Knot, is good for line to line connections and extending your tippet from your leader when fly fishing. Learn to tie this fly knot which is great for dry fly applications since it lays on the water nicely for a very smooth presentation.
